Draft Grade — Saints
Overall D
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureB
Best value of the weekend goes to the Saints for James: D.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Saints shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Every board in the league had Thornton Jr. lower, and that gap is the story.

However the rest shakes out, James at that price is a win they earned.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a red-zone target to build around at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
A slide stopped in the 35th overall pick, with Nick Emmanwori worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick40 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Walter Nolen reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick58 Rnd2 Benjamin Morrison
Benjamin Morrison at pick No. 58 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick71 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at No. 71 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick80 Rnd3 Darien Porter
Good price on Darien Porter in pick 80, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick109 Rnd4 Dylan Fairchild
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dylan Fairchild in No. 109. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick146 Rnd5 Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough slid further than he should have, and the 146th pick is lovely value for the quarterback. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick152 Rnd5 Jordan James
Steal is underselling it; Jordan James at Round 5, Pick 13 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick155 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 155 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick157 Rnd5 Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten in the 157th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick186 Rnd6 Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II in pick No. 186 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick188 Rnd6 Jordan Hancock
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Hancock at the Round 6 slot, and it noticed. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
