Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
D
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Saints to a D. The Saints looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 200 regardless, 31 picks early.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
The Tyjae Spears pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In pick No. 9 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Worthy at the 45th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick106
Rnd4
Marshawn Kneeland
They paid sticker price for Marshawn Kneeland in pick 106, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick122
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams at No. 122 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick136
Rnd4
Edefuan Ulofoshio
They went early on Edefuan Ulofoshio in the 136th pick, and the value did not follow. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick152
Rnd5
Austin Booker
Austin Booker in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick170
Rnd5
Isaiah Davis
A conviction pick on Isaiah Davis at slot 170 that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick176
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at pick No. 176 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick192
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
No edge and no loss on Jared Wiley in No. 192; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick200
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson at pick 200 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
