Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall C+
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA+
Daniels is the plan now, and the Commanders grade out a C+.

Start where it matters. The Commanders took Jayden Daniels to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will need Thomas to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

Hall Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Jayden Daniels
In pick No. 8 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
Pick36 Rnd2 Troy Fautanu
Fair-plus on Troy Fautanu, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick40 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick43 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick 43 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick64 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in the 64th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67 Rnd3 Payton Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Wilson at Round 3, Pick 3, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick100 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
They paid sticker price for Khyree Jackson in slot 100, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102 Rnd4 Michael Hall Jr.
Michael Hall Jr. is a better player than No. 102 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick129 Rnd4 Cole Bishop
No drama and no debate, Cole Bishop went about where he belonged in pick No. 129. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick141 Rnd5 Dylan Laube
They took Dylan Laube at par in No. 141, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick175 Rnd5 Javon Baker
Javon Baker in pick 175 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick181 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Curtis Jacobs. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick223 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
They paid up for Joshua Cephus at the 223rd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick237 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas in the 237th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
