Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The Panthers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. The Panthers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Vinson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That Burden III pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In pick No. 8 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick31
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In No. 31 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
Nice patience on Luther Burden III, who had no business lasting to slot 36. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
A straight-up fair deal on Maxwell Hairston at the 74th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick85
Rnd3
Isaiah Bond
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Isaiah Bond at the 85th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick146
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
They paid a round early for Andres Borregales in Round 5, Pick 8, more than the board wanted. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick171
Rnd5
Kyle Williams
They took Kyle Williams at par in pick 171, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick197
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
Good price on Oronde Gadsden II in the Round 6 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick216
Rnd6
Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson at No. 216 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
