Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall

FutureB-
The Panthers let Fitzgerald fall into their laps, and walked away with a C-. Somebody in the 227th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Panthers sat still while Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 117 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The cost of the West reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
A whole weekend of picks and offensive lineman is somehow still a want.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick57
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
You do not let a safety like Malaki Starks reach slot 57 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick74
Rnd3
Azareye'h Thomas
The board had Azareye'h Thomas higher than pick No. 74, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick109
Rnd4
Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo in the 109th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jack Bech
Jack Bech at the 112th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick118
Rnd4
Barrett Carter
They barely believed it either: Barrett Carter still on the board at the Round 4 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick145
Rnd5
Lathan Ransom
Circle this one: Lathan Ransom at pick 145 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick173
Rnd5
CJ West
CJ West at No. 173 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick194
Rnd6
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick227
Rnd7
Ryan Fitzgerald
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, Ryan Fitzgerald in Round 7, Pick 11, plain and simple. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick249
Rnd7
Trevor Etienne
Taking Trevor Etienne in No. 249 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
