Grand theft in slot 43: the Falcons steal McKinstry and grade out a B+. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Falcons were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
On value alone, McKinstry makes the weekend a net positive. It is not that Abrams-Draine is a bad player; it is that the Falcons had louder needs to answer first.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the 15th overall pick they get a problem off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Taking Kool-Aid McKinstry in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick46
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
They did well to land Darius Robinson in pick No. 46, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick74
Rnd3
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at the 74th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick79
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
A want over a need in pick 79: Kris Abrams-Draine adds a cornerback while quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick82
Rnd3
Malik Washington
Malik Washington in No. 82 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick110
Rnd4
Renardo Green
Renardo Green in pick No. 110 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick142
Rnd5
Roger Rosengarten
They took Roger Rosengarten at par in the 142nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick232
Rnd7
Trey Knox
Trey Knox at slot 232 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
