Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C+
ValueC NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
The Steelers land in the muddy middle: C+.

The Steelers did not so much draft Nathaniel Watson as overpay for him, 35 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

The Steelers indulged a want in Van Pran while a need in quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In slot 20 they get a building block for the line. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
A want over a need in pick No. 51: Sedrick Van Pran adds an offensive lineman while quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick84 Rnd3 Jalen McMillan
A reach on Jalen McMillan in Round 3, Pick 20; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick98 Rnd3 Andru Phillips
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Andru Phillips. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick119 Rnd4 Justin Eboigbe
They reached a country mile for Justin Eboigbe at the 119th overall pick, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick178 Rnd6 Nathaniel Watson
A wild overpay on Nathaniel Watson in the 178th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick195 Rnd6 JD Bertrand
They reached into another round for JD Bertrand, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
