FutureB-
The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: C. Nobody else had Marcus Harris anywhere near No. 215. The 49ers did, by 41 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. With running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back.
So much rides on Jackson Powers-Johnson that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the 31st pick they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Kiran Amegadjie
Nice patience on Kiran Amegadjie, who had no business lasting to pick No. 63. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 94 on Maason Smith with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Pick98
Rnd3
Malik Washington
A wild overpay on Malik Washington in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick132
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
A straight-up fair deal on Cedric Gray at Round 4, Pick 32, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick139
Rnd5
Jaylin Simpson
They liked Jaylin Simpson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 139. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick176
Rnd6
Kitan Oladapo
A tidy little value on Kitan Oladapo in slot 176, a step better than break-even. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick209
Rnd6
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at the 209th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
No edge and no loss on Jared Wiley in pick 214; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Marcus Harris
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Marcus Harris well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick249
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
A reach for Nathaniel Watson in the 249th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
