Draft Grade — Saints
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Saints kept it disciplined and banked a B-.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Donovan Smith at pick 184 is 86 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. However the rest shakes out, Nolen at that price is a win they earned.

They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get an every-down engine for the run game at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick40 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
Taking Walter Nolen in the 40th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick71 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
They took Tate Ratledge at par in pick No. 71, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick93 Rnd3 David Walker
They jumped the gun on David Walker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick112 Rnd4 Tory Horton
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Tory Horton. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131 Rnd4 Elijah Roberts
A big swing on Elijah Roberts at the 131st pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick184 Rnd6 Donovan Smith
A wild overpay on Donovan Smith in slot 184, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick248 Rnd7 Dante Trader Jr.
Dante Trader Jr. at Round 7, Pick 32 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick254 Rnd7 Kitan Crawford
They read the board right and Kitan Crawford was the payoff at No. 254. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
