FutureA
A solid, sensible weekend for the Falcons: B-. There is reaching, and then there is Shilo Sanders at the 40th overall pick. The Falcons jumped the board by 38 and dared it to prove them wrong. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting White where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
Jack Sawyer in the Round 1 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick40
Rnd2
Shilo Sanders
Shilo Sanders at the 40th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick59
Rnd2
Tory Horton
Tory Horton at the 59th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick72
Rnd3
Quincy Riley
A reach on Quincy Riley in pick 72; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick116
Rnd4
Wyatt Milum
Wyatt Milum at pick No. 116 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick136
Rnd5
Bryce Foster
They paid up for Bryce Foster at slot 136 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick148
Rnd5
Aydan White
A slide stopped in the 148th overall pick, with Aydan White worth more than the price. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick200
Rnd7
Will Sheppard
They jumped the gun on Will Sheppard, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick204
Rnd7
Keaten Wade
A straight-up fair deal on Keaten Wade at pick No. 204, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick214
Rnd7
Damon Payne Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Damon Payne Jr. in slot 214, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
