Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureC+
Best value of the weekend goes to the Steelers for Neal: C.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Steelers were there to profit. Devin Neal, the No. 80 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 161.

Every board in the league had Caldwell lower, and that gap is the story. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

If Luther Burden III and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Luther Burden III
A reasonable price with a little left over, Luther Burden III in slot 22. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick30 Rnd1 Derrick Harmon
In No. 30 they get a disruptive interior force. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick52 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at pick 52 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick83 Rnd3 Jack Bech
A reach for Jack Bech in the 83rd overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick86 Rnd3 Jeffrey Bassa
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jeffrey Bassa. The roster fit checks out.
Pick161 Rnd5 Devin Neal
Devin Neal at the 161st pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick218 Rnd7 Bhayshul Tuten
You do not let a running back like Bhayshul Tuten reach pick No. 218 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at Round 7, Pick 7 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick229 Rnd7 Ollie Gordon II
Circle this one: Ollie Gordon II at pick 229 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick245 Rnd7 Shilo Sanders
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Shilo Sanders. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
