Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Commanders left with their quarterback, and a B- to match. Start where it matters. The Commanders took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
They are betting Powers-Johnson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
No drama and no debate, Caleb Williams went about where he belonged in the 2nd overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick36
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They paid a round early for Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick 36, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick40
Rnd2
Ladd McConkey
A clean, defensible pick in the 40th pick with a little surplus value in Ladd McConkey. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the Round 3 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick100
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith at No. 100 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick102
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in slot 102; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick141
Rnd5
Dylan Laube
Dylan Laube in pick No. 141 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick181
Rnd6
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten in Round 6, Pick 6 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick223
Rnd7
Marcus Harris
They paid up for Marcus Harris at pick 223 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
