The Jets drew a line under the quarterback search with Ward: A-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Jets were there to profit. Wyatt Milum, the No. 23 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 221st overall pick. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
Whatever Cam Ward becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Andru Phillips gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Cam Ward and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In the 12th pick they get a franchise quarterback, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Ashton Jeanty
Ashton Jeanty in pick No. 43 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick44
Rnd2
Will Campbell
You do not let an offensive lineman like Will Campbell reach slot 44 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick75
Rnd3
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen in the 75th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick92
Rnd3
Quinn Ewers
Circle this one: Quinn Ewers at pick 92 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick118
Rnd4
Jahdae Barron
Jahdae Barron at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick147
Rnd5
Colston Loveland
They barely believed it either: Colston Loveland still on the board at No. 147. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick165
Rnd5
Kyle Kennard
The board fumbled Kyle Kennard all the way to Round 5, Pick 27, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick183
Rnd6
Malachi Moore
They robbed the room for Malachi Moore here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick206
Rnd6
Xavier Restrepo
They will replay Xavier Restrepo at the 206th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick221
Rnd7
Wyatt Milum
Wyatt Milum in No. 221 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
