4D9RZ DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Liufau: B-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Marist Liufau, the No. 148 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 176.
The 49ers indulged a want in Williams while a need in offensive lineman, wide receiver and other spots stayed open. They punted on offensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In slot 31 they get juice off the edge, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper at the 63rd pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jaden Hicks
They robbed the room for Jaden Hicks here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick98
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at Round 3, Pick 35 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick125
Rnd4
James Williams
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Offensive lineman, wide receiver and other spots needed the pick; a safety in James Williams did not.
Pick132
Rnd4
Kalen King
A reach on Kalen King in No. 132; the board had better options right there. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick176
Rnd6
Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau in pick No. 176 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick209
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs slipping to the 209th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick214
Rnd6
Tyler Owens
They went early on Tyler Owens in pick 214, and the value did not follow. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick215
Rnd6
Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan in the 215th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick249
Rnd7
Tatum Bethune
The board had cheaper options than Tatum Bethune at Round 7, Pick 29, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
