4D9RZ DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 75 spots for Trevor Keegan, and value like that does not grow back. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
On value alone, Baker makes the weekend a net positive. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Keon Coleman
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They did well to land Edgerrin Cooper in No. 63, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick94
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at Round 3, Pick 31 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98
Rnd3
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at the 98th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick132
Rnd4
Brandon Coleman
A big swing on Brandon Coleman at the 132nd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176
Rnd6
Trevor Keegan
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trevor Keegan well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jawhar Jordan
Jawhar Jordan at No. 209 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick214
Rnd6
Javon Baker
The board fumbled Javon Baker all the way to pick 214, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215
Rnd6
Isaac Guerendo
They talked themselves into Isaac Guerendo at the 215th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
A reach on Nathaniel Watson in the Round 7 slot; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
