4D9RZ DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Grand theft in the Round 2 slot: the 49ers steal Guyton and grade out a B-. When a board-topper like Tyler Guyton slides to slot 63, you do not overthink it, and the 49ers did not. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They will need Jordan to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In pick 31 they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Pick63
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in No. 63 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maason Smith
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
Pick98
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 35. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick177
Rnd6
Kitan Oladapo
A clean, defensible pick in the 177th pick with a little surplus value in Kitan Oladapo. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jonah Monheim
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jonah Monheim. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick213
Rnd6
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at pick No. 213 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jawhar Jordan
A conviction pick on Jawhar Jordan at pick No. 215 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Trevor Keegan
Trevor Keegan in pick 252 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
