The 49ers let Helm fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. The 49ers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Gunnar Helm, the No. 73 name on the board, in the Round 3 slot.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The cost of the Harmon reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The Shaquill Griffin pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Derrick Harmon
In the Round 1 slot they get a wrecking ball inside, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick46
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
A tidy bit of business in the 46th overall pick, where Tyler Booker graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick97
Rnd3
Gunnar Helm
A tight end of that caliber at pick 97 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick100
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman at pick No. 100 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
