Frampton DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B. You can draft well and still miss the point. The 49ers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to interior defensive lineman, which was the need that mattered most. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will need Curry to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Sarratt. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In the 27th pick they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Elijah Sarratt at Round 2, Pick 27. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick92
Rnd3
Caden Curry
They paid a round early for Caden Curry in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick127
Rnd4
Logan Jones
They paid sticker price for Logan Jones in pick No. 127, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick133
Rnd4
Cyrus Allen
Cyrus Allen at No. 133 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Hezekiah Masses
Hezekiah Masses slid further than he should have, and pick 138 is lovely value for the cornerback. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick165
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Nwankpa at the 165th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick171
Rnd5
Kobe Baynes
Kobe Baynes in slot 171 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick244
Rnd7
Rueben Owens II
Rueben Owens II in the 244th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
