Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall

FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B-. The 49ers did not so much draft Malachi Lawrence as overpay for him, 88 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Spending an early pick on cornerback with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They banked enough surplus on Cooper Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Olaivavega Ioane
In No. 30 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence at slot 58 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick92
Rnd3
Chandler Rivers
A reasonable price with a little left over, Chandler Rivers in the Round 3 slot. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick94
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at the 94th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick127
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
They did well to land Keylan Rutledge in Round 4, Pick 27, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133
Rnd4
Trey Moore
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Moore in pick No. 133, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 38 on Domani Jackson with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Pick171
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
A straight-up fair deal on Aamil Wagner at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick217
Rnd7
Jeff Caldwell
Jeff Caldwell in pick 217 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
