Larceny in the 251st overall pick lands the 49ers a D, Milton III and all. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots went begging. The Milton III steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The cost of the Gore Jr. reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick31
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge, and a steal at that.
Pick48
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Somehow Tyler Guyton was still sitting there in slot 48, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran in pick 94 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick96
Rnd3
T.J. Tampa
Steal is underselling it; T.J. Tampa at the 96th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick131
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
Mohamed Kamara in No. 131 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick133
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots to take Elijah Jones, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick176
Rnd6
Walter Rouse
Walter Rouse in the 176th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick211
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A conviction pick on Frank Gore Jr. at pick 211 that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III in Round 7, Pick 31 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
