Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Devin Culp, 80 picks early at the 251st overall pick. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Davis.
Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The phones were busy but the ledger stayed level.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick64
Rnd2
Christian Haynes
By-the-book stuff, Christian Haynes at slot 64 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Malik Washington
Malik Washington at No. 94 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick123
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
They took Cedric Gray at par in pick No. 123, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones at the 130th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick131
Rnd4
Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett in the 131st pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick132
Rnd4
Brennan Jackson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Brennan Jackson in pick 132, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick175
Rnd5
Isaiah Davis
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Isaiah Davis in No. 175. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
They paid sticker price for Jaylen Harrell in slot 215, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick232
Rnd7
Dominique Hampton
They reached a country mile for Dominique Hampton at Round 7, Pick 12, and the board is aghast. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick251
Rnd7
Devin Culp
A wild overpay on Devin Culp in the 251st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
