Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D-.

The 49ers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jermayne Lole at the 253rd pick regardless, 51 picks early. Put together, it is a D-.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still on the board. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

They banked enough surplus on Smith to cover a lot of smaller sins.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Troy Franklin
In slot 28 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick32 Rnd1 Troy Fautanu
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick60 Rnd2 Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes in No. 60 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick64 Rnd2 Ricky Pearsall
They paid sticker price for Ricky Pearsall in the 64th overall pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick95 Rnd3 Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots open.
Pick98 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Khyree Jackson at pick No. 98, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick99 Rnd3 Javon Solomon
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick 99 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick132 Rnd4 James Williams
James Williams at Round 4, Pick 32 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick177 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs at pick No. 177 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick210 Rnd6 Jase McClellan
By-the-book stuff, Jase McClellan at the 210th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick213 Rnd6 Tanor Bortolini
No edge and no loss on Tanor Bortolini in the 213th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick215 Rnd6 Xavier Thomas
A real head-scratcher, Xavier Thomas in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick253 Rnd7 Jermayne Lole
A big swing on Jermayne Lole at No. 253, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
