Markdel80 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

FutureC+
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it. Of all the ways to open, the 49ers chose the head-scratcher, spending the 94th overall pick on Maason Smith with quarterback and tight end still wide open.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Every board in the league had Green lower, and that gap is the story. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton at No. 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick67
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick90
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
A tidy bit of business in slot 90, where Roman Wilson graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A curious use of No. 94. Quarterback and tight end needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick98
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in pick No. 98. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick103
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
They went early on Darius Robinson in the 103rd overall pick, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick132
Rnd4
Renardo Green
They talked themselves into Renardo Green at the 132nd pick, and the board did not agree. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick176
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs in pick 176 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick209
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
No edge and no loss on Gabe Hall in Round 6, Pick 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick214
Rnd6
Kingsley Eguakun
Kingsley Eguakun at slot 214 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
They liked Jase McClellan enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 6 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Xavier Thomas
A big swing on Xavier Thomas at the 249th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
