Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall

TradesB-
FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Washington: B. The 49ers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Malik Washington fell into pick No. 124. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They will need Wiley to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In the 31st overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick69
Rnd3
Max Melton
They paid up for Max Melton at slot 69 when waiting would have done the job. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94
Rnd3
Devontez Walker
The board fumbled Devontez Walker all the way to the 94th pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick105
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Khyree Jackson in pick No. 105 leaves running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick124
Rnd4
Malik Washington
Malik Washington in pick 124 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jared Wiley
Value said wait; Jared Wiley in No. 131 says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick133
Rnd4
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyrone Tracy Jr.. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176
Rnd6
Mason McCormick
Steal is underselling it; Mason McCormick at Round 6, Pick 1 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick211
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
By-the-book stuff, Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 211 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick215
Rnd6
Dominique Hampton
Dominique Hampton in No. 215 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick251
Rnd7
Jalen Sundell
Nothing to complain about; Jalen Sundell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
