Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueC- NeedB TradesB FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the 49ers.

Boards are made to be trusted, and the 49ers shredded theirs for R.J. Oben. He came off 142 spots early, and the room will hear about it. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

The Perkins Jr. value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Josh Conerly Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick46 Rnd2 Jordan Burch
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Burch in Round 2, Pick 14 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick57 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in the 57th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick77 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
They paid a round early for Donovan Jackson in pick No. 77, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick89 Rnd3 Jake Majors
They paid sticker price for Jake Majors in No. 89, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100 Rnd3 Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor in slot 100 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick113 Rnd4 Maxwell Hairston
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Maxwell Hairston at pick 113. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick137 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick190 Rnd6 Harold Perkins Jr.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Harold Perkins Jr. in the 190th pick, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick220 Rnd7 R.J. Oben
R.J. Oben at slot 220 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick249 Rnd7 Jared Wilson
They barely believed it either: Jared Wilson still on the board at No. 249. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick254 Rnd7 Clay Webb
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 254th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
