Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueA NeedB TradesC+ FutureB-
Grand theft in Round 7, Pick 10: the 49ers steal Ward and grade out a B.

When a board-topper like Cam Ward slides to Round 7, Pick 10, you do not overthink it, and the 49ers did not.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The cost of the Williams reach is exactly the players who went right after him. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Travis Hunter
In slot 11 they get a press-man option on the boundary at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick43 Rnd2 Armand Membou
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Armand Membou graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75 Rnd3 Ashton Jeanty
They robbed the room for Ashton Jeanty here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick118 Rnd4 Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen in pick 118 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick120 Rnd4 Colston Loveland
Somehow Colston Loveland was still sitting there in No. 120, and they pounced on premier tight end value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jake Majors
Taking Jake Majors in the 138th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick139 Rnd4 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at the 139th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick148 Rnd5 Maxwell Hairston
Circle this one: Maxwell Hairston at pick No. 148 is a fall that decides a draft. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick158 Rnd5 Jared Wilson
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jared Wilson reach slot 158 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick189 Rnd6 Kyle Williams
A conviction pick on Kyle Williams at pick 189 that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick195 Rnd6 DJ Giddens
A top-tier running back at a bargain, DJ Giddens in No. 195, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick228 Rnd7 Cam Ward
Steal is underselling it; Cam Ward at the 228th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick232 Rnd7 Sebastian Castro
Sebastian Castro in pick No. 232 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick255 Rnd7 Shemar Turner
The board fumbled Shemar Turner all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
