Willyboys DRAFTING FOR THEChargers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Chargers, and a B- to prove it. The Chargers clearly saw something nobody else did in Ethan Downs, taking him 71 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Bassa. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick55
Rnd2
Bradyn Swinson
No drama and no debate, Bradyn Swinson went about where he belonged in pick No. 55. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick86
Rnd3
Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch in the 86th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick125
Rnd4
Tahj Brooks
Tahj Brooks at the 125th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick158
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
The board fumbled Jeffrey Bassa all the way to slot 158, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick181
Rnd6
Jake Briningstool
Somehow Jake Briningstool was still sitting there in pick 181, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick199
Rnd6
Ethan Downs
A wild overpay on Ethan Downs in Round 6, Pick 23, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick209
Rnd6
Kobe Hudson
Kobe Hudson slid further than he should have, and the 209th pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick214
Rnd6
Alex Mastromanno
A reasonable price with a little left over, Alex Mastromanno in No. 214. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick218
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
You do not let a safety like R.J. Mickens reach slot 218 and blink. They did not. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
By-the-book stuff, Jaylin Smith at the 255th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
