Willyboys DRAFTING FOR THEPanthers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Panthers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Panthers reached some 98 spots for Oluwafemi Oladejo, and value like that does not grow back.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get juice off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick57
Rnd2
Elic Ayomanor
No drama and no debate, Elic Ayomanor went about where he belonged in pick No. 57. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Value said wait; Antwaun Powell-Ryland in slot 74 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick111
Rnd4
Mello Dotson
A wild overpay on Mello Dotson in the 111th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick114
Rnd4
Elijah Roberts
Elijah Roberts in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick140
Rnd5
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo in the 140th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick146
Rnd5
Ahmed Hassanein
Ahmed Hassanein at No. 146 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick163
Rnd5
Ben Sauls
Ben Sauls at pick No. 163 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick227
Rnd7
Clay Webb
They reached into another round for Clay Webb, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
