Willyboys DRAFTING FOR THEBills
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bills
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Bills kept it disciplined and banked a B-. The Bills went off the board in a big way for Seth McLaughlin, 72 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
Pierce falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The Bills indulged a want in Sauls while a need in linebacker, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the linebacker spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
Grey Zabel at the 30th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick56
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson in slot 56 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick62
Rnd2
Harold Fannin Jr.
The board had Harold Fannin Jr. higher than No. 62, and the tight end fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick109
Rnd4
Ben Sauls
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Ben Sauls at specialist with linebacker, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
Pick132
Rnd4
Charles Grant
They robbed the room for Charles Grant here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick169
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
This one needs a full-page explanation: Seth McLaughlin in pick No. 169, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick170
Rnd5
Brashard Smith
Steal is underselling it; Brashard Smith at the 170th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick173
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce at No. 173 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick177
Rnd6
Tahj Brooks
Somehow Tahj Brooks was still sitting there in pick 177, and they pounced on premier running back value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick206
Rnd6
Akili Arnold
No edge and no loss on Akili Arnold in slot 206; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
