Willyboys DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Luke Elzinga at pick No. 113 is 82 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
Getting White III where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Spending an early pick on specialist with quarterback and edge rusher open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In No. 11 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in pick 43 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jake Majors
A wild overpay on Jake Majors in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Elic Ayomanor in the 100th overall pick, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113
Rnd4
Luke Elzinga
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Luke Elzinga at specialist with quarterback and edge rusher open.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tyler Cooper
Tyler Cooper at the 138th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick147
Rnd5
Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom in pick 147 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick187
Rnd6
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant slipping to Round 6, Pick 11 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick226
Rnd7
Tyler Loop
Tyler Loop in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jackson Hawes in slot 230, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick249
Rnd7
Ricky White III
Ricky White III in No. 249 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252
Rnd7
Ja'Quinden Jackson
The board fumbled Ja'Quinden Jackson all the way to the 252nd pick, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
