Draft Grade — Colts
Overall
A-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureA+
The Colts let Mondon Jr. fall and pounced. Final grade: A-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Smael Mondon Jr. got past him. The Colts do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 156. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
The Brown pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The phones were where this weekend was really won. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.
They will answer for taking safety early while wide receiver, quarterback and other spots went begging.
Bottom line, with Nick Emmanwori leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
You do not let a safety like Nick Emmanwori reach pick No. 41 and blink. They did not. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick47
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at the 47th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick49
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jihaad Campbell at slot 49 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick60
Rnd2
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in No. 60 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick74
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
A surprising call. With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the 74th overall pick on Andrew Mukuba, a safety they were not short of.
Pick95
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick102
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at pick 102 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick104
Rnd4
Logan Brown
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Logan Brown. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick108
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
A slide stopped in the 108th overall pick, with Mason Taylor worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick116
Rnd4
Daylen Everette
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Daylen Everette adds a cornerback and leaves wide receiver, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Pick156
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
The board fumbled Smael Mondon Jr. all the way to pick No. 156, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
