Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueB+
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureB+
Ransom should have been long gone. The Bears pounced, and earned a B+. Call it larceny. Lathan Ransom sat on the board until slot 161, and the Bears did not need to be asked twice.
The Fairchild reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Winston Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, cornerback and other spots.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 30th overall pick they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
They robbed the room for Tyler Warren here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick66
Rnd3
Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins at Round 3, Pick 2 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick72
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
They reached a country mile for Dylan Fairchild at No. 72, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jake Majors
They paid sticker price for Jake Majors in pick No. 95, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick132
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, cornerback and other spots to take Kevin Winston Jr., a safety that was not the priority.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jared Wilson
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 149 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick161
Rnd5
Lathan Ransom
They barely believed it either: Lathan Ransom still on the board at the 161st pick. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick197
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
You do not let a wide receiver like Dont'e Thornton Jr. reach the 197th pick and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Pick235
Rnd7
Trevor Etienne
Trevor Etienne at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick242
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Nothing to complain about; Ty Hamilton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
