Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Patriots: B-.

The Patriots bet big and early on Princewill Umanmielen, 44 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

They banked enough surplus on Stribling to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick19 Rnd1 KC Concepcion
A reach for KC Concepcion in pick 19; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick55 Rnd2 Malik Muhammad
They took Malik Muhammad at par in Round 2, Pick 23, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick86 Rnd3 Deontae Lawson
They read the board right and Deontae Lawson was the payoff at slot 86. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick113 Rnd4 Blake Miller
The board had cheaper options than Blake Miller at pick No. 113, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick121 Rnd4 Tao Johnson
No drama and no debate, Tao Johnson went about where he belonged in the 121st pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick159 Rnd5 Kage Casey
A slide stopped in the Round 5 slot, with Kage Casey worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick197 Rnd6 Desmond Reid
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Desmond Reid well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Pick208 Rnd6 Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick224 Rnd7 Jordan White
They reached a country mile for Jordan White at Round 7, Pick 6, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick241 Rnd7 De'Zhaun Stribling
Quietly one of the better values of the day, De'Zhaun Stribling at pick 241. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
