Draft Grade — Lions
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB
FutureC+
The Lions kept it disciplined and banked a B-. Some picks age like wine; Alex Birchmeier at pick 202 will need to, sitting 57 spots clear of his grade.
However the rest shakes out, Fifita at that price is a win they earned. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Connor Lew
In No. 29 they get protection for the quarterback, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59
Rnd2
Ian Strong
Ian Strong in the 59th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick80
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A tidy little value on A.J. Haulcy in the 80th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick167
Rnd5
Duce Robinson
Steal is underselling it; Duce Robinson at pick No. 167 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick202
Rnd6
Alex Birchmeier
They reached into another round for Alex Birchmeier, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick206
Rnd6
DJ Harvey
Good price on DJ Harvey in Round 6, Pick 23, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick216
Rnd6
Noah Fifita
Noah Fifita in pick No. 216 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick221
Rnd7
Kelby Collins
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kelby Collins this early at No. 221. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
