Helm should have been long gone. The Vikings pounced, and earned a B. The board owed the Vikings one, and it paid up: Gunnar Helm, the No. 97 name on the board, sitting there at slot 140 like a gift left on the doorstep.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Safety is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
The board had Nick Emmanwori higher than the 31st pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jack Bech
Jack Bech in the 95th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick97
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in Round 3, Pick 33 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick140
Rnd5
Gunnar Helm
Somehow Gunnar Helm was still sitting there in pick 140, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick161
Rnd5
Dorian Strong
No edge and no loss on Dorian Strong in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
