Lew should have been long gone. The Chiefs pounced, and earned a B-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chiefs were there to profit. Connor Lew, the No. 61 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 109.
The cost of the Kelly reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
T.J. Parker
In No. 9 they get a problem off the edge, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Pick29
Rnd1
Kenyon Sadiq
In the Round 1 slot they get a red-zone target to build around at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Joshua Josephs
They paid sticker price for Joshua Josephs in Round 2, Pick 8, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick74
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton at pick 74 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick109
Rnd4
Connor Lew
Connor Lew in the 109th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick148
Rnd5
Nyjalik Kelly
Nyjalik Kelly at pick No. 148 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick169
Rnd5
Marlin Klein
By-the-book stuff, Marlin Klein at the 169th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick176
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
They read the board right and Aamil Wagner was the payoff at slot 176. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick210
Rnd6
Josh Moten
A reasonable price with a little left over, Josh Moten in the Round 6 slot. A minor itch, scratched.
