Draft Grade — Jets
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Jets bet the future on Mendoza. The board says B. After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Jets committed. Fernando Mendoza is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Every board in the league had Coogan lower, and that gap is the story. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Downs where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In No. 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick18
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
They read the board right and Caleb Downs was the payoff at Round 1, Pick 18. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick34
Rnd2
Chris Bell
Chris Bell in pick 34 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick46
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in the 46th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick104
Rnd4
Akheem Mesidor
They reached into another round for Akheem Mesidor, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick176
Rnd5
Trinidad Chambliss
Nothing to complain about; Trinidad Chambliss went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick178
Rnd5
Monroe Mills
A tidy little value on Monroe Mills in the 178th pick, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick196
Rnd6
Drayk Bowen
They paid a round early for Drayk Bowen in slot 196, more than the board wanted. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick205
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
A wild overpay on Pat Coogan in Round 6, Pick 24, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick212
Rnd6
Cam Calhoun
Cam Calhoun is a better player than the 212th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick218
Rnd7
De'Zhaun Stribling
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on De'Zhaun Stribling. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick239
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
Brandon Inniss in pick 239 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
