0987 DRAFTING FOR THEJets

Draft Grade — Jets

The Jets found their guy under center in Mendoza: B-. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Jets spent their marquee pick on Fernando Mendoza, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They are betting Payton proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Daniels pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick No. 3 they get the arm they will build around, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick32
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
A reach for Anthony Hill Jr. in pick 32; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kayden McDonald
No edge and no loss on Kayden McDonald in slot 35; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick46
Rnd2
Nyck Harbor
They paid a round early for Nyck Harbor in the Round 2 slot, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick103
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 3, where Zakee Wheatley graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick178
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Value said wait; Patrick Payton in the 178th overall pick says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick192
Rnd6
Adon Shuler
Adon Shuler at No. 192 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick205
Rnd6
Isaiah Jatta
Value with a capital V on Isaiah Jatta in the 205th pick, a genuine coup. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick207
Rnd6
Cam Calhoun
Cam Calhoun in Round 6, Pick 28 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick239
Rnd7
Kayin Lee
Kayin Lee in No. 239 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick254
Rnd7
Alex Birchmeier
They paid up for Alex Birchmeier at the 254th pick when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jalon Daniels
They barely believed it either: Jalon Daniels still on the board at the Round 7 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
