Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The Patriots got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D+. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Patriots did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.
The Zuhn III pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Tate falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In the 30th pick they get a No. 1 receiver, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick62
Rnd2
Nyck Harbor
They did well to land Nyck Harbor in the 62nd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94
Rnd3
Mikail Kamara
They liked Mikail Kamara enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 30. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick118
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
A tidy little value on Chris Johnson in pick 118, a step better than break-even. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick130
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bray Hubbard. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick170
Rnd5
Rayshaun Benny
They left a pile of value on the table to take Rayshaun Benny this early at slot 170. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick194
Rnd6
Mark Fletcher Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Mark Fletcher Jr. at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick195
Rnd6
Jaren Kanak
They went early on Jaren Kanak in No. 195, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick200
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the 200th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick209
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at slot 209 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
