Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C+
ValueB- NeedB TradesC- FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Patriots: C+.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Patriots reached some 72 spots for Markis Deal, and value like that does not grow back. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.

For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Sadiq value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Hit on Kenyon Sadiq and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Kenyon Sadiq
In the 31st pick they get a moveable chess piece at tight end at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick41 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in Round 2, Pick 9 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick95 Rnd3 Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling at pick No. 95 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick125 Rnd4 Domani Jackson
They jumped the gun on Domani Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick131 Rnd4 Kevin Coleman Jr.
They paid up for Kevin Coleman Jr. at slot 131 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick169 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
Good price on Xavier Nwankpa in pick 169, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick189 Rnd6 Antonio Kite
No drama and no debate, Antonio Kite went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 10. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick200 Rnd6 Luke Altmyer
A clean, defensible pick in No. 200 with a little surplus value in Luke Altmyer. The roster fit checks out.
Pick207 Rnd6 Markis Deal
Markis Deal in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick210 Rnd6 Riley Mahlman
A conviction pick on Riley Mahlman at the 210th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick247 Rnd7 Kendrick Law
A straight-up fair deal on Kendrick Law at slot 247, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
