Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
A-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
The Patriots worked the phones like thieves and earned a A-. Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Patriots came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.
The Morrison pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They banked enough surplus on Sanders to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Will Campbell
Will Campbell in the 8th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick39
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They talked themselves into Donovan Jackson at pick No. 39, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick41
Rnd2
Josaiah Stewart
Josaiah Stewart at Round 2, Pick 9 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jay Higgins
A tidy bit of business in the Round 3 slot, where Jay Higgins graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick86
Rnd3
Evan Stewart
A straight-up fair deal on Evan Stewart at pick 86, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick108
Rnd4
Benjamin Morrison
Benjamin Morrison at the 108th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jonah Coleman
They reached a country mile for Jonah Coleman at slot 144, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick218
Rnd7
Kyren Lacy
No drama and no debate, Kyren Lacy went about where he belonged in No. 218. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick220
Rnd7
Cooper Mays
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cooper Mays well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick236
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
Circle this one: Shilo Sanders at pick 236 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick256
Rnd7
Dorian Strong
No edge and no loss on Dorian Strong in No. 256; it is a wash and a sensible one. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
