Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureA-
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Bears started one anyway for Trajan Jeffcoat, 125 picks ahead of schedule. The math is unkind, and the D follows.

They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.

The McGlothern value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Bears paired the rookies with proven help, Jerry Jeudy leading the way.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In the 1st overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick10 Rnd1 Jared Verse
Jared Verse at pick No. 10 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick43 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
Value said wait; Sedrick Van Pran in No. 43 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick58 Rnd2 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at pick 58 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick72 Rnd3 Trey Benson
They reached a country mile for Trey Benson at slot 72, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick75 Rnd3 Devontez Walker
Value with a capital V on Devontez Walker in the 75th pick, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick79 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Leonard Taylor III well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick97 Rnd3 Braelon Allen
They jumped the gun on Braelon Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick112 Rnd4 Beaux Limmer
A premium they did not need to pay, Beaux Limmer a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick114 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at pick No. 114 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick123 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
They reached into another round for Luke McCaffrey, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick127 Rnd4 Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker at slot 127 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick160 Rnd5 Layden Robinson
They paid up for Layden Robinson at the 160th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick170 Rnd5 Tahj Washington
Tahj Washington at Round 5, Pick 34 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171 Rnd5 Jared Wiley
A big swing on Jared Wiley at pick No. 171, well ahead of any board in the building. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick178 Rnd6 Trajan Jeffcoat
Trajan Jeffcoat in the 178th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick187 Rnd6 Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan in the 187th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick189 Rnd6 Javontae Jean-Baptiste
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Javontae Jean-Baptiste. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jowon Briggs
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jowon Briggs in slot 209, miles early. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick214 Rnd6 Tyler Owens
Tyler Owens at pick 214 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick215 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern in No. 215 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick240 Rnd7 Jordan Whittington
They paid sticker price for Jordan Whittington in pick 240, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick253 Rnd7 Jalen Coker
No drama and no debate, Jalen Coker went about where he belonged in pick No. 253. The roster fit checks out.
Pick254 Rnd7 David Ugwoegbu
They talked themselves into David Ugwoegbu at the 254th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick256 Rnd7 Carson Steele
They left a pile of value on the table to take Carson Steele this early at slot 256. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick257 Rnd7 Dallas Gant
A wild overpay on Dallas Gant in the 257th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
