Of all the ways to open, the Jets chose the head-scratcher, spending pick 44 on Anthony Hill Jr. with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still wide open.

The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Caldwell pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
