0987 DRAFTING FOR THEJets

Draft Grade — Jets

A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Jets get a C+. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Jets shredded theirs for Jeff Caldwell. He came off 44 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
They will answer for taking linebacker early while running back went begging. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
So much rides on Arvell Reese that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the Round 1 slot they get a green-dot type in the middle at fair value. More want than need.
Pick16
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Sonny Styles while clear needs at running back sat open.
Pick33
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman at the 33rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick44
Rnd2
Dani Dennis-Sutton
A big swing on Dani Dennis-Sutton at Round 2, Pick 12, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jaeden Roberts
They went early on Jaeden Roberts in pick No. 103, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick175
Rnd5
Jadon Canady
Jadon Canady at slot 175 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick178
Rnd5
Jeff Caldwell
Jeff Caldwell at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick192
Rnd6
Cole Payton
Cole Payton in the 192nd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick206
Rnd6
Josh Moten
Josh Moten in the 206th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick209
Rnd6
Zxavian Harris
Zxavian Harris at Round 6, Pick 30 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick218
Rnd7
Jalen Huskey
Jalen Huskey at slot 218 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick242
Rnd7
Josh Cuevas
By-the-book stuff, Josh Cuevas at pick No. 242 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
