The Bears let Borregales fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+. You build a draft on nights like this. Andres Borregales had no business being available in the 240th pick, and the Bears did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
Reaching for McLaughlin left real value on the table behind him. The phones were where this weekend was really won. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
No drama and no debate, Tyler Booker went about where he belonged in the 39th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick55
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at slot 55 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
They robbed the room for Jihaad Campbell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick97
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts in Round 3, Pick 33 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jake Majors
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Majors reach pick 128 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick147
Rnd5
Elic Ayomanor
Taking Elic Ayomanor in the 147th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick157
Rnd5
Barrett Carter
Steal is underselling it; Barrett Carter at pick No. 157 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick159
Rnd5
Hayden Conner
Nice patience on Hayden Conner, who had no business lasting to the Round 5 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick164
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
Value said wait; Seth McLaughlin in the 164th overall pick says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick193
Rnd6
Jared Wilson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jared Wilson well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick233
Rnd7
Clay Webb
They read the board right and Clay Webb was the payoff at the Round 7 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick240
Rnd7
Andres Borregales
Circle this one: Andres Borregales at pick 240 is a fall that decides a draft. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
