Draft Grade — Browns
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureA+
The Browns drew a line under the quarterback search with Ward: D.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Browns took J.J. Weaver at the Round 5 slot, roughly 175 spots before his name belonged. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.

Getting James where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The whole projection now runs through Cam Ward; hit there and everything else looks smarter.

The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Cam Ward
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick22 Rnd1 Mykel Williams
In No. 22 they get juice off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker slid further than he should have, and pick No. 33 is lovely value for the linebacker. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick34 Rnd2 Donovan Jackson
They reached a country mile for Donovan Jackson at slot 34, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Pick67 Rnd3 TreVeyon Henderson
They read the board right and TreVeyon Henderson was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick86 Rnd3 Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at pick 86 is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick102 Rnd4 Jake Majors
Nothing to complain about; Jake Majors went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick103 Rnd4 Joshua Farmer
They liked Joshua Farmer enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 103. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick163 Rnd5 J.J. Weaver
J.J. Weaver in No. 163 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177 Rnd6 Seth McLaughlin
A big swing on Seth McLaughlin at Round 6, Pick 2, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick190 Rnd6 Cam Skattebo
A running back of that caliber at the 190th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick198 Rnd6 Nohl Williams
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nohl Williams this early at slot 198. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick214 Rnd6 Jordan James
Jordan James in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick215 Rnd6 Arian Smith
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Arian Smith well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick256 Rnd7 Jaishawn Barham
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jaishawn Barham in Round 7, Pick 40, plain and simple. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
