Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureB+
The Steelers left with their quarterback, and a D to match.

The tape said wait; the Steelers did not. Joe Milton III went at the 160th pick, a good 34 picks before the board was ready.

Whatever Bo Nix becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

The DeJean steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Guyton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Bo Nix
In pick No. 23 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38 Rnd2 JC Latham
The board fumbled JC Latham all the way to No. 38, and they scooped it up. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick66 Rnd3 Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin in Round 3, Pick 2 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76 Rnd3 Quinyon Mitchell
Taking Quinyon Mitchell in pick 76 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick80 Rnd3 Tyler Guyton
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Tyler Guyton adds an offensive lineman and leaves interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick87 Rnd3 Brian Thomas Jr.
They barely believed it either: Brian Thomas Jr. still on the board at slot 87. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick106 Rnd4 Cooper DeJean
Cooper DeJean at Round 4, Pick 6 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick116 Rnd4 Will Shipley
Will Shipley slid further than he should have, and pick 116 is lovely value for the running back. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick121 Rnd4 Max Melton
Good price on Max Melton in pick No. 121, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick138 Rnd5 Jaylan Ford
A real head-scratcher, Jaylan Ford in slot 138 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick149 Rnd5 Khyree Jackson
They will replay Khyree Jackson at the Round 5 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick160 Rnd5 Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III at the 160th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick194 Rnd6 Ricky Pearsall
They took Ricky Pearsall at par in No. 194, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick237 Rnd7 Luke Reimer
A tidy little value on Luke Reimer in the 237th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick244 Rnd7 Joshua Gray
Nothing to complain about; Joshua Gray went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
