Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Slaughter should have been long gone. The Texans pounced, and earned a B-. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Texans watched Jake Slaughter slide 23 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will need Miller to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Olaivavega Ioane
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Christen Miller
Christen Miller in the 38th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick59
Rnd2
Jadarian Price
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jadarian Price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Taking Jake Slaughter in slot 69 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller at pick 106 is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick128
Rnd4
Eric Rivers
A straight-up fair deal on Eric Rivers at Round 4, Pick 28, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick165
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
No drama and no debate, Xavier Nwankpa went about where he belonged in the 165th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick243
Rnd7
Ethan O'Connor
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ethan O'Connor at pick No. 243 is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick244
Rnd7
Trey Holly
No edge and no loss on Trey Holly in Round 7, Pick 28; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
