Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall D
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureA
The Commanders got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Commanders spent the Round 3 slot on Tyreak Sapp, a name most had 32 spots down the list.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. The Thieneman steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In slot 26 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. More want than need.
Pick60 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman at pick No. 60 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick65 Rnd3 Omar Cooper Jr.
Nice patience on Omar Cooper Jr., who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 1. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick71 Rnd3 Jake Golday
They let Jake Golday come to them and pounced at pick 71. The roster fit checks out.
Pick91 Rnd3 Tyreak Sapp
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tyreak Sapp well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick104 Rnd4 Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton in the 104th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick141 Rnd5 Albert Regis
Albert Regis at No. 141 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick145 Rnd5 Drew Allar
Drew Allar in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick185 Rnd6 Matt Gulbin
They did well to land Matt Gulbin in the 185th pick, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick196 Rnd6 Dalton Johnson
Dalton Johnson at Round 6, Pick 17 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick217 Rnd7 Miles Kitselman
No edge and no loss on Miles Kitselman in slot 217; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick223 Rnd7 Josh Cuevas
Josh Cuevas at pick No. 223 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
