FutureB
More right than wrong for the Lions, and a B to prove it. The Lions did not so much draft Jaylon Hutchings as overpay for him, 105 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick48
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. in pick 48 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick63
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
They barely believed it either: Keon Coleman still on the board at No. 63. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick73
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kingsley Suamataia at slot 73. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick114
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cedric Gray. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick124
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Good price on Javon Foster in pick No. 124, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick166
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
A big swing on Joe Milton III at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick177
Rnd6
Fabien Lovett
They took Fabien Lovett at par in the 177th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick201
Rnd6
Walter Rouse
You do not let an offensive lineman like Walter Rouse reach pick No. 201 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick205
Rnd6
Jowon Briggs
A wild overpay on Jowon Briggs in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick212
Rnd6
Trente Jones
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Trente Jones in pick 212, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick232
Rnd7
JD Bertrand
They read the board right and JD Bertrand was the payoff at the 232nd overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jaylon Hutchings
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylon Hutchings well ahead of where he belonged. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
